L'ambretta è una pianta cugina dell'ibisco originaria dell'Asia, dell'Insulindia e del Pacifico le cui foglie contengono i semi. L'uso dell'ambretta è molto antico poiché è citata nei trattati di medicina ayurvedica. È incorporato in rimedi per tutti i tipi di disturbi e presso alcune tribù sudamericane l'ambretta è un sostituto del caffè. Nel XVIII secolo, le persone approfittavano del suo odore muschiato per incipriare guanti e capelli.
